Electric vehicle drivers in Cremorne are set to benefit from four new kerbside charging spots, with North Sydney Council recently approving plans for 27 EV charging locations spread across the local government area.
The four Cremorne sites — at 232 Ben Boyd Road, 2 Hampden Avenue, 9 Paling Street, and 68 Murdoch Street — form part of a broader rollout led by charge point operator EVX Australia. Rather than relying on standalone infrastructure, the chargers will be mounted directly onto existing Ausgrid electricity poles, a method that avoids digging up the road, keeping costs down and footpath clutter to a minimum.
Each location will have a 22kW three-phase AC dual-port charger serving two dedicated parking bays. The spaces will be clearly signed as “Electric Vehicles Only While Charging,” so they can’t be used as general parking while a vehicle is plugged in.
For residents who don’t have a garage or a driveway — which covers a fair chunk of Cremorne’s unit and apartment dwellers — having a charger around the corner could make owning an EV a much more practical proposition. Ausgrid estimates around 800,000 customers across its network have limited opportunities to install their own EV charging systems, due to a lack of off-street parking, prohibitive costs, rental agreements, or strata restrictions.
The good news for ratepayers is that the project won’t cost North Sydney Council a thing. EVX Australia will fund, install, and manage the entire network, covering electricity supply, maintenance, signage, and customer support. The chargers will run on a separate electricity meter — meaning no drain on council power accounts and no ongoing expense for the council.
Drivers will need to download the EVX Australia app to start a charging session, and will need to bring along their own Type 2 charging cable. EVX’s pole chargers use Type 2 universal sockets and connect to the Telstra 4G network for monitoring and billing.
The Cremorne sites are among 27 proposed locations approved across the North Sydney LGA, with others covering Cammeray, Cremorne Point, Crows Nest, McMahons Point, Mosman, Neutral Bay, North Sydney, and Wollstonecraft.
EVX Australia has been progressively expanding its pole-mounted charging network across greater Sydney and beyond. The Ausgrid and EVX partnership first launched in Sydney in Glebe in early 2023, and has since expanded to inner-city suburbs including Millers Point, Pyrmont, Newtown, Camperdown, Darlinghurst, Alexandria, and Rosebery, as well as regional locations such as Byron Bay. The North Sydney LGA rollout represents a continued push northward across the harbour.
No installation timeline has been specified in the council’s announcement.
