Design Expert Secures Multi-Million Dollar Profit on Cremorne Point Home Renovation

Former Elle magazine editor and interior design expert Deb Coffey has sold her Cremorne Point waterfront home for between $11.5 million and $12 million, nearly doubling her investment in just three years.

Coffey and her photographer husband Ross purchased the five-bedroom property on Kareela Road in 2022 for $7.15 million before embarking on an extensive renovation. Working with architects Villa + Villa, the couple preserved the home’s 1909 heritage features while completely transforming the interiors.

The renovated property now boasts direct access to Old Cremorne Wharf, a self-contained studio, large rumpus room, three-car garage, and a rooftop terrace with harbour views. The stylish interiors reflect Coffey’s design expertise, honed through renovating at least 10 properties and running her Mosman homewares store, Manyara Home.

According to Michael Coombs of Atlas real estate, the sale comes after an unsuccessful listing last year. This year’s market proved more favourable, with “three or four parties fighting for” the property.

“There are more buyers around this year, but they are not in a hurry,” Coombs noted. “They’re happy to pay for the right property though.” He added that expats and buyers relocating between areas are active in the market, predicting “some good sales go through before April.”

The Cremorne Point area continues to attract premium prices for distinctive properties, particularly those with waterfront access and harbour views.

Baker Bleu Expands to Cremorne with a Full Café Menu

Cremorne’s café scene just got a major boost with the arrival of Baker Bleu’s latest outpost. The beloved Melbourne bakery has expanded beyond takeaway, bringing a full café menu to its largest location yet.

Baker Bleu Expands to Cremorne with a New Café and Sourdough Pizzas

Baker Bleu has brought its beloved sourdough to Cremorne, marking its fourth and largest location to date. Known for its long-fermented breads, the bakery has introduced something new—an expanded café menu featuring breakfast, lunch, and sourdough pizzas. Nestled on Dover Street, the new space is designed to serve both daily bread shoppers and those looking for a relaxed meal in one of Melbourne’s busiest inner-city neighbourhoods.

The Cremorne location officially opened its doors in early 2024 and operates from 7:00 am to 4:30 pm on weekdays and 7:00 am to 3:00 pm on weekends.

A Bakery First for Baker Bleu: A Full Café Menu

Unlike its other locations in Elsternwick and Hawksburn, which focus primarily on takeaway, Baker Bleu Cremorne offers dine-in options for the first time. The café serves Market Lane coffee along with a new breakfast menu that includes dishes such as challah French toast with whipped ricotta and fig and breakfast ficelles with prosciutto and gruyère stuffing.

From 10:30 am, lunch menu begins, bringing with it a mix of sandwiches, fresh salads, and sourdough pizzas. The patrons can indulge in a ploughman’s plate with soft-boiled egg, CopperTree butter, and new-baked bread, and Roman-style pizzas with zucchini, garlic cream, and stracciatella or traditional margherita with walnut pesto and chilli oil.

A Space Designed for the Cremorne Community

Baker Bleu partnered with IF Architecture and Studio Round to create a space that fits seamlessly into Cremorne’s fast-growing food scene. The café features American oak, aluminium, and stainless steel, designed to reflect traditional bread-making techniques. A central communal table sits inside, showcasing locally sourced produce, fresh flowers, and artisanal goods available for purchase.

The seating is informal, with 20 indoor seats and additional outdoor options along Dover Street. Unlike traditional restaurants, customers order at the counter and find their own seating.

Cremorne’s Food Scene Just Got a New Favourite Spot

With its mix of classic sourdough favourites and a new café experience, Baker Bleu’s Cremorne expansion is set to become a staple for both local residents and office workers looking for quality baked goods and simple, well-crafted meals. Whether stopping in for a quick coffee and pastry or sitting down for a full meal, the bakery’s latest venture offers something new while staying true to what has made Baker Bleu a Melbourne institution.

Film Screening in Cremorne Sheds Light on Sensitive Topic

A powerful documentary on intrafamilial childhood sexual abuse, “Such a Resounding Silence,” will be screened at the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace in Cremorne, aiming to lift the veil on the often-silenced issue of incest in Australia.

Event Details

The screening, presented by The CorriLee Foundation, is scheduled for 16th September 2024. Light refreshments will be served from 5:45 p.m. to 6:20 p.m., and the main proceedings will begin at 6:30 p.m. Jennifer Byrne will host the event, which will feature keynote speeches by Grace Tame, CEO and Founder of the Grace Tame Foundation, and Jean Kittson. Both speakers will address the difficult topic of child sexual abuse and incest, encouraging a community-wide conversation about this sensitive issue.

About the Film

“Such a Resounding Silence,” originally titled “Un Silence si Bruyant,” is a documentary by French actress Emmanuelle Béart, co-directed by Anastasia Mikova. Béart, known for her roles in “Manon of the Springs” and “Mission: Impossible,” recently revealed that she is an incest survivor.

Through this film, Béart aims to challenge the societal taboos that keep such experiences hidden. The documentary includes a mix of first-person accounts and ensemble voices, providing a platform for survivors to speak out against the silence and shame surrounding incest.

The film explores the harsh realities of child sexual abuse, focusing on France, where a child is sexually victimised every three minutes. Béart, initially hesitant to share her own story, highlights the profound impact of the silence that is often imposed on victims by their abusers, which can manifest in various destructive ways.

Community Involvement and Awareness

The CorriLee Foundation, through events like this screening and their “No Laughing Matter” podcast series, seeks to bring attention to the alarming statistics of incest and the experiences of survivors. The podcast features narrators such as Ray Martin, Jean Kittson, Hugo Weaving, Grace Tame, Heather Mitchell, Jennifer Byrne, Andrew Denton, Rev Bill Crews, Adam Hills, Chrissie Swan, and Wil Anderson, all contributing to the discussion about these critical issues.

Event organisers call on the Cremorne community and beyond to attend the screening and participate in the conversation. They believe that ending the silence around child sexual abuse is essential for creating a supportive environment for survivors and driving societal change.

Local Health Officials Oppose McDonald’s Drive-Thru Expansion Plan

Did you know that local District Health officials recently opposed plans submitted by McDonald’s to expand their drive-thru service in Cremorne, citing concerns about obesity among locals, among other things?

In April 2022, McDonald’s lodged plans to add a new drive-thru lane at their Cremorne outlet on Military Road to accommodate the growing demand for in-car dining.

The company said that plans are geared towards improving the efficiency of its drive-through operation by increasing its capacity and providing a second point of order to reduce congestion and minimise the need for parking.

Opposition

The development plan was opposed by officials of the Northern Sydney Health District, according to a document submitted last 6 May 2022.

Officials argued that if approved, the proposals would negatively impact the existing efforts to tackle obesity among locals, amidst other concerns.

Two of the other concerns raised are adequate provisions for parking and the lack of any traffic analysis that can substantiate the claim that the “consolidation of two driveways into one is considered beneficial to Military Road and will improve road safety at the access point.”

They said that the proposal also needed to adequately address pedestrian and road-user safety.

Also, NSLHD’s Cremorne Health Centre sits directly opposite the proposed development site. The development, opposing parties said, could result in the centre’s vulnerable persons not being able to park in the vicinity for their health appointments as parking spots could be taken by the store’s customers, staff, visitors and contractors.

They also said that allowing the food chain to increase accessibility to fast food by way of an expanded drive-through, “may negatively” impact the resident’s eating habits and “undermine” the existing health strategies aimed at tackling obesity.

The letter noted that based on data from the Australian Urban Observatory, “Cremorne already has “more than adequate” access to fast food.” An expanded drive-through, they said, will not likely provide positive population health outcomes.

Maccas Cites Better Customer Experience

Estimated to cost around $548,620, the proposed development will see its second driveway reconfigured, nine parking spaces and outdoor dining space removed and the indoor area reduced to make way for the additional lane.

“The proposed works are considered beneficial to the existing operation and will provide for a better service and experience being provided to drive-thru customers,” McDonald’s Statement of Environmental Effects document states.

Redlands Private School Gunning to Buy Monford Place in Cremorne

Did you know that the Cremorne private school Redlands has been purchasing homes and properties surrounding its campus, and that they now wish to purchase Monford Place from the North Sydney Council?

In the past three years alone, Redlands, a private school in Sydney’s north shore, has made it their mission to purchase a series of homes and properties near their campus. After going on a multimillion-dollar spending spree, the school was able to obtain a grand total of 12 new properties — including residences in areas such as Military Rd, Monford Place, and Winnie St.

The school currently owns all the properties on Monford Place, and now they are vying to close Monford Place to the public. Redlands made an official request to the North Sydney Council to consider its potential for sale after meeting with them in February. If approved, the school will have to pay a $50,000 bond to bankroll an investigation into the potential road closure and sale process.

School representatives commented that the incorporation of the Monford Place Road into the school’s boundaries would help them develop a master plan for the site due to its increased flexibility. The Council is currently considering the school’s request, and in the event that their request is approved, the process would take at least 12 to 18 months to complete.

Redlands can be found at 272 Military Rd, Cremorne. For more information on the school, visit their website here. Follow their social media pages on Facebook and Instagram for the latest updates and announcements concerning their bid to purchase the properties and roads surrounding their campus.

Cremorne Orpheum: Plan Proposed for New Walk of Fame

Plans are in the works to revamp Cremorne Orpheum into an all-new walkway reminiscent of the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The walkway will be created to immortalise famous Australian actors and actresses such as Hugh Jackman, Cate Blanchett, and even Babe the pig with bronze plaques along the footpath just outside the heritage-listed Orpheum Theatre in Cremorne.

Over 1,000 signatures have already been collected by the man spearheading the proposal, Ulrik Funch, who believes that the walkway would honour big names in the film industry while simultaneously providing the art-deco Orpheum Theatre with a greater deal of historical and cultural significance.

The proposal has the support of the North Sydney Council. Discussions are currently underway with the Orpheum Theatre’s managers to make Funch’s proposal a reality. The council aims to assist the proposal by helping define its scope and consulting the community for input.

Should the walkway be approved, it will officially become the second film-themed attraction of its kind in Sydney, with the first being the Australian Walk of Fame outside of the Ritz Cinema in Randwick which was established earlier in 2008.

Mr Funch commented that having a second Walk of Fame in Sydney would not detract from the value of the original, further adding that the plaques along Cremorne Orpheum — if approved — could contain information on each Australian film icon and bring the spotlight to them.

The Orpheum Theatre can be found at 380 Military Road, Cremorne. For more information, visit their website here. Follow their social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram for the latest updates and announcements.

Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace in Cremorne in Top 50 Most Beautiful Cinemas in the World

Stepping into the doors of the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace in Cremorne is like stepping back in time to the grand old days of cinema. Built in 1935, this well-known art deco building has recently been named one of the Top 50 Most Beautiful Cinemas in the World.

Time Out has listed Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace as 24th on their list of the world’s most gorgeous theatres, singling out the stunning structure as the “grandest cinema” in Sydney. One of its most appealing features is a genuine Wurlitzer pipe organ that emerges from the orchestra pit during weekend evening screenings.

Designed by George Kenworthy, one of Sydney’s top 20th-century architects, the Orpheum took nine months to construct and swiftly became one of the region’s best art deco buildings. It started off as a two-level 135-seater cinema for film and musical buffs and eventually became a premier events place until the 1940s. At the back of the cinema were several dressing rooms for live presentations and its very own fly-tower for flying scenes during ballets or theater productions.

The Orpheum’s popularity, however, dipped during the mid-century as the building aged and was closed for some time. In the 1970s, a commercial developer bought the property but and turned it into a shopping arcade with a gym, despite protests from the public.

In 1986, Mike Walsh (OBE), a well-known TV personality and businessman, took ownership of The Orpheum under the Hayden Group of Companies. He worked with historians and designers to restore the building to its former glory.

The restoration was done in several stages to expand the main cinema (Orpheum) to accommodate 755 seats. Also, 180 seats were added to the Lounge Cinema. The building’s original and ornate art deco details were restored whilst mood lighting and elaborate carpet designs were added. The ceiling was also modified to complement the artistic design. The cinema reopened a year after construction started.

Today, the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace is a six-screen complex with the latest equipment and technology. However, its architecture will always be a wonderful reminder of The Golden Age, a time when going to the cinema was a glamorous event.

4 Things to Remember When Getting Rid of Household Waste in Cremorne

Do you need to get rid of large amounts of household waste? Do you have old furniture and appliances to dispose of? In Cremorne, disposing of these items are conveniently possible because the North Sydney Council collects these items at least two times a month.

Below are five things to remember if you need to dispose of household wastes in Cremorne.

1. The Council has a set schedule for household waste pick-up.

For the rest of 2019, take note of these following dates if you plan to be included in the regular pick-up schedule:

  • 05 August
  • 19 August
  • 02 September
  • 16 September
  • 30 September
  • 14 October
  • 28 October
  • 11 November
  • 25 November
  • 09 December
  • 23 December

2. You have to book your household waste pick-up with the Council.

While the pick-up schedules are set, you have to book your inclusion in the pick-up schedule. Otherwise, the collectors will not know if you need to dispose of some items.

There are actually two ways to do to book: online or by phoning the council at 1300 799 019. You need to make your booking by 4 p.m. on the Sunday before the intended pick-up date.

3. Don’t put out your items for disposal early.

The Council discourages setting your items for disposal before Sunday or Monday morning of the pick-up date. This is to discourage people from piling up trash on the streets and invite unwanted looters or conflicts among neighbours. The items must be placed within a two square metre distance from your property.

Single-dwelling households are allowed a two square metre content for their disposed items while those who live in multi-unit apartments are allowed half a square metre content. Smaller items must be placed in cardboard boxes or plastic.

4.  Take note of the items that can and cannot be disposed during this regular schedule.

The household waste pick-up is different from the recyclable waste or Green Waste pick-up.  So you cannot include glass, cardboards, tree loppings, leaves and garden wastes in this Monday schedule.

The following items are acceptable:

  • clothing
  • china
  • furniture
  • mattress
  • carpet (rolled and bundled)
  • small appliances e.g. microwaves
  • white goods e.g. fridge, stove, washing machine, dryers (taped, tied and weighing more than 90 kilograms)

The collectors will NOT pick-up:

  • soil and concrete wastes
  • chemical, bathroom, laundry or kitchen wastes
  • renovation wastes, including paint
  • car parts, including the tyres
  • old toilets, vanities and sinks

The North Sydney Council has a complete list online of acceptable and unacceptable items. It is recommended that you consider swapping, reselling or giving away old items first before putting them out for trash.

For more details, watch this video from the North Sydney Council on the proper disposal of wastes.
