Lower North Shore Gets Front-Row View as Warships Gather in Sydney Harbour

Sydney Harbour will become the centre of a major international naval display this weekend, with around 30 warships from nearly 20 nations assembling within close range of Lower North Shore suburbs.

Rare gathering on city waters

The event marks one of the largest naval gatherings in Sydney in more than a decade and forms part of Exercise Kakadu, led by the Royal Australian Navy.

It also coincides with 125 years since the founding of the Royal Australian Navy, with the fleet review serving as a key ceremonial event.

HMAS Leeuwin will carry the reviewing officer through the assembled fleet, with ships delivering formal salutes as part of the inspection.

A column of vessels is expected to pass through the harbour toward the Sydney Harbour Bridge, offering a clear visual along the main channel.

Day-long program of events

Activities begin from 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, 21 March 2026, with ships entering Sydney Harbour through the morning.

The fleet review will take place between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., accompanied by a Royal Australian Air Force aerial display from 2:45 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. and a gun salute at 3:45 p.m.

A public vessel sail-past is scheduled for 4:00 p.m., followed by a historical flotilla procession at 6:45 p.m.

Key viewing locations identified

Lower North Shore residents are expected to have direct views of the event from several foreshore locations.

Bradleys Head, Georges Head Lookout, Cremorne Reserve and Kurraba Reserve have been highlighted as primary vantage points, with large crowds expected throughout the day.

Authorities have advised early arrival for those planning to watch from land.

Waterway restrictions, including exclusion zones around naval vessels, will be enforced across Sydney Harbour on 21 and 22 March.

Boaters are required to comply with maritime directions and maintain safe distances from participating ships.

On land, limited parking and increased demand are expected. Public transport is recommended, with additional bus services planned for key areas.
